A flood of men and women in dark, rain-slicked windbreakers poured into the room. They moved with absolute, terrifying efficiency, immediately fanning out to secure the perimeter of the booking area. The bold yellow letters FBI were stamped across the backs of their tactical vests, intermingled with agents wearing the state seal of the Bureau of Investigation.

"Hands away from your weapons! Step back from the desk!" a voice commanded.

It wasn't a request. It was an absolute kinetic wall of authority. Four federal agents stepped forward, their hands resting firmly on their holstered weapons, their eyes locked onto Hollister and Miller.

A tall man in a tailored gray suit and a dark overcoat walked through the center of the formation. He held a leather folio in his left hand. His badge was clipped to his belt, catching the fluorescent light. He looked around the sterile booking room, his eyes sweeping over the frozen dispatch booth, the locked computer terminal, and finally landing on my bloodied face and handcuffed wrists.

He didn't look angry. He looked like a man who had come to tear a building down to its foundation.

"What in the hell is going on here?" Hollister demanded, his voice cracking slightly as he realized he was entirely outgunned and outmaneuvered in his own fortress. "I am the elected Sheriff of this county. You are trespassing in a secure law enforcement facility."

The man in the suit walked directly up to the booking counter, stopping two feet from Hollister. He did not introduce himself. He did not offer his hand.

"Sheriff Ray Hollister," the man said, his voice cold and flat. "My name is Special Agent Marcus Thorne, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Public Corruption Task Force. And as of four minutes ago, you no longer possess any authority in this building."

"On whose orders?" Hollister spat, his face flushing a dangerous crimson. "You can't just walk in here and lock down my precinct!"

Thorne opened the leather folio. He pulled out a stack of freshly printed, time-stamped documents.

"On the orders of a federal magistrate judge, acting on direct evidentiary referral from Naval Criminal Investigative Service and the Pentagon's internal security directorate," Thorne said, reading the words with mechanical precision. "Forty-five minutes ago, a secure federal server received unedited, time-stamped audio of you admitting to the battery of a civilian, intimidation of a witness, and the corruption of a sitting county judge. Ten minutes later, that same server received high-resolution photographs of a fraudulent medical chart being actively falsified by your subordinate at a county-funded clinic."

Hollister’s jaw went slack. The color drained from his face so fast he looked physically ill. He turned his head slowly, looking at the bricked phone sitting silently on the metal counter.

"You're under investigation for deprivation of rights under color of law, federal wire fraud, and witness tampering," Thorne continued, closing the folio. He looked past Hollister, his eyes locking onto Deputy Miller, who was now pressed flat against the back wall, his hands raised in the air, nowhere near his weapon. "Deputy Tyler Miller, you are under investigation for assault, unlawful detainment, and destruction of evidence."

"He attacked my deputy!" Hollister shouted, a desperate, flailing attempt to rebuild his shattered narrative. He pointed a thick finger at me. "He came into this county and started tearing up public property! We have it on record!"

"You have nothing on record, Sheriff," Thorne corrected him smoothly. "Your entire digital infrastructure has been seized and quarantined by federal cyber-security teams. We have the audio of Deputy Miller attacking this man in the clinic. We have the GPS routing that proves you were supposedly off-duty and vehicle-less when you assaulted him at the diner. Your narrative does not exist."

Thorne took a step forward, closing the distance. The federal agents behind him shifted slightly, a silent, coordinated tightening of the noose.

"Take your hand off your duty belt, Sheriff," Thorne ordered, his voice dropping into a deadly, quiet register. "Unbuckle it. Let it drop to the floor. Do it right now, or this escalates from a corruption arrest to an armed standoff you will not survive."

Hollister stared at Thorne. He looked around the room at the federal agents, then up at the dispatch booth where Carl was staring down in absolute shock. The impenetrable kingdom Hollister had built over twenty years had just evaporated in the span of sixty seconds.

Slowly, his hands shaking with a mixture of rage and terror, Hollister reached down and unclipped the heavy brass buckle of his duty belt. The leather rig, heavy with his service weapon, magazines, and radio, slipped off his waist and crashed loudly against the linoleum floor.

Miller didn't even wait to be asked. He frantically unbuckled his own belt, letting it drop, and immediately placed his hands flat against the cinderblock wall behind him.

"Secure them," Thorne ordered.

Two federal agents moved forward instantly, spinning Hollister around and forcing his hands behind his back. The sharp, mechanical click of federal handcuffs locking around the Sheriff's wrists echoed loudly in the silent room.

Thorne turned away from the arrest and walked over to me. He looked at the unnatural angle of my right shoulder and the blood dried into the collar of my canvas jacket. He reached out, taking a small steel key from his pocket, and slid it into the cuffs digging into my wrists.

The metal ratchets disengaged. My arms fell forward, heavy and numb. The sudden rush of blood back into my fingertips felt like a swarm of angry hornets, but the agonizing pressure on my shoulder finally broke. I leaned forward, catching my breath, rubbing my scarred wrists.
