Hayes looked slowly from my phone to Detective Shaw.

Shaw was frozen. The color had completely drained from his face. He recognized his own recorded voice. He recognized the specific, undeniable phrasing. Plant the package. It wasn't ambiguous. It wasn't a tactical code word. It was a direct, recorded admission of a conspiracy to fabricate felony evidence against a civilian.

"Plant the package," Hayes repeated softly, the words hanging heavy in the cold air. He took one step toward Shaw. "Is that your standard operating procedure, Detective? Extorting five hundred dollars in cash and planting narcotics at the county line?"

"That audio is manipulated," Shaw stammered, stepping backward, his hands coming up in a defensive gesture. "He altered it. He's trying to frame us to get out of a charge."

"I uploaded it to a secure cloud server while I was still sitting inside your fenced lot," I said, looking directly at Shaw. "The metadata will prove the exact time and location it was recorded. Just like the photos of the tracker I took before I left the gate."

Hayes didn't wait for Shaw to invent another lie. He unclipped his radio from his shoulder.

"Dispatch, this is Unit 44," Hayes said, his eyes never leaving Shaw. "I need a supervisor at the Exit 45 Petro, fuel lane four. And get a hold of the County Prosecutor's internal integrity unit. Tell them we have a city officer detained outside his jurisdiction on a suspected evidence-tampering and extortion conspiracy."

"Understood, 44," the dispatcher crackled back.

"Turn around, Shaw," Corbo said, stepping up behind the detective and drawing his handcuffs with a sharp metallic clack. "Keep your hands away from your belt."

Shaw didn't fight. The absolute certainty of the digital evidence had broken him. He slowly turned around, placing his hands behind his back as the heavy steel cuffs were ratcheted tightly around his wrists.

"Now," Hayes said, turning his attention back to me. "You said your logistics manager remotely killed the engine?"

"Yes," I said. "He tried to force me onto State Route 119, straight into their trap. When I refused and pulled into this lot instead, he bricked the truck."

"Call him," Hayes instructed. "Put him on speaker."

I opened the phone dialer and tapped Marcus’s number. It rang twice before Marcus picked up. He didn't sound angry anymore; he sounded panicked.

"Walter, where are you?" Marcus demanded immediately. "The telematics show you're offline at the Petro. I told you to take 119! You are violating company protocol. I'll have the police pull you from that cab!"

"The police are already here, Marcus," I said, holding the phone flat so the microphone picked up everything. "I'm standing outside the truck with the State Troopers."

Dead silence on the other end of the line.

"Mr. Marcus, this is Sergeant Hayes with the State Police," Hayes leaned in toward the phone, his voice carrying the full weight of a badge that wasn't for sale. "Your driver has filed a formal DOT complaint regarding an unauthorized route deviation and a remote engine kill on an active highway facility. Can you confirm you ordered him to bypass the interstate for a restricted-weight county road?"

Marcus stammered, the corporate authority dissolving entirely. "I... I was just following standard routing algorithms, Officer. Traffic avoidance. The engine kill must have been an automated security glitch."

"We’ll be securing the company's dispatch logs under a preservation order within the hour," Hayes said coldly. "Do not log out of your system, and do not leave your office. State investigators are on their way to your terminal."

Hayes reached out and tapped the red disconnect button on my screen.

The trap was shattered. The municipal officers who thought they could operate like a cartel were being ripped out of the shadows, and the corporate manager who had sold me out was trapped in his own digital footprint. I took a deep breath, the suffocating pressure in my chest finally releasing as the sound of approaching state police sirens began to wail in the distance.
